There is a big misunderstanding in the industry, and we are going to correct it .
Many people think when they get started in a home based business that they are going to be hand held and told what to do each day. That is not the definition of Free Enterprise, that's what we all call a J-O-B.

The reasons people get started in home based businesses vary. But one thing is clear, no one signed up to have another boss tell them what to do. You are going to be responsible for your own actions... after all you are running your very own business. This may be a little bit scary, but you will find that it's quite exciting - and you are not in this by yourself.

So let’s clarify what your sponsor's responsibilities are:
To support you.

By support we do not mean ordering you around. You are surrounded by people who are like minded, and you will find comfort in this. You will have just enough support to know you are not alone, but not enough to feel like you're at a job. There is a fine balance.

A Craftsman Dilemma

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, when I am not working on my Daily Income Network business, I build and sell a line of rustic home accessories. All my products are handmade by me and are of very nice quality and built to last a life time and more. Here is an article I wrote about what we craftsmen and craft women face as we struggle in today's market place..........

For years now, I have been building furniture and home accessories by hand. Each piece I have created has been designed and put together by me alone and finished with the utmost care. In today’s highly competitive world, craftsman like myself are unfortunately getting pushed to the side by the “box furniture” we see in so many stores like Wal-Mart and Kmart.

To the normal untrained eye, this boxed furniture looks great. You can purchase a pine end table for around $50.00 to $75.00 that looks well made and has a decent finish on it. You can purchase at the same store a table and 4 chairs for $150.00 that will certainly hold up for at least a few years.

So how do my colleagues and I compete with this? There is no way I can buy the wood, put in the time involved in cutting the pieces, assembling them and putting the finish on for $50.00 and still make a profit. My table and chairs wholesale for no less than $400.00 and that means they sell in a retail store for $800.00. In other words, a true craftsman cannot compete and this is the dilemma we are facing today.

I am a firm believer in hand made goods, doing business with a hand shake instead of a contract and giving to people excellent quality in both my products and customer service. This is disappearing in America quicker than we would like. The hands on, old style, down to earth craftsman is slowly being put to the wayside.

I remember back way back when, (much to long to admit to you), when I started making my first products to sell. I made a ton of birdhouses and a ton of twig baskets. I sold these at a very reasonable price and it was a great beginning to my future products I developed later. Now, you can buy on many Internet sites birdhouses and baskets made in China that are of good quality and are under $10.00 each. I couldn’t even walk to my shop for $10.00 let alone make a basket for that.

So what do we do? It is up to the people who still believe in the true quality of handmade products and the craftsmanship that goes into them to stay away from Wal-Mart and Kmart for furniture and go back to buying solid, well made, handcrafted goods. Not only will you find the product you purchase most likely be one of a kind, but it will also last your lifetime and more.

Not Interested In An Online Business...Why Not Start A Cleaning Business?

If you want to open a business but haven’t decided what kind of business you will operate, why not open your own cleaning business? This business is farily easy to set up with low overhead and you really don’t need training and experience but you must have the determination to succeed.

The first thing you do is register your business. Registration of a business is a requirement in opening a business in most states. You could use your name in your business cleaning services or any simple name which can be easily remembered by your prospective clients. I have a window washing business along with my Daily Income Network business and the name I use is Clearwater Window Washing.

Make a promotional flyer for the cleaning service you are about to operate. You can also advertise in any bulletin or local newspaper. I run a monthly ad in my local Idaho Falls paper and it costs about $50.00 a month. You can easily find clients because the cleaning business is in high demand. Every home or office needs to be cleaned no matter what the state of the economy is. If you decide to do business with banks, you may be required to get a bonding license and getting liability insurance is a good idea too. Just check with your state or city requirments and see what is needed to become legal and get started.

Another way to promote your business is to distribute business cards and it is effective and inexpensive. Making your business cards colorful will make a better impression on your prospective clients.

The Daily Income Network Loves Smoked Salmon

Here is a post I made some time ago on my Clearwater Cabin Living blog about a great recipe to smoke salmon....enjoy!

Have you ever tried to smoke a fish? (I know, it is hard to get them lit!) Anyway, I have here a great recipe for smoking salmon and trout that is simple but very tasty. In a minute, I will give you the recipe but first a little story about how this recipe came about.

Years ago, my uncle Bob along with his 2 sons and his father-in-law decided they would like to start fishing for the small Kokanee salmon, (commonly called bluebacks), at a couple North Idaho lakes namely Lake Coeur d’Alene and Lake Pend Oreille. My uncle came up with this special bait he figured would catch those fish like crazy so they all decided to give it a try. Back in those days, maybe 30 or more years ago, both these lakes had commercial fishing available on them with limits from 125 to 250 fish a day per person for the small Kokanee salmon. On a good day, a group of four could really bring in the fish. My uncle and his crew all purchased commercial licenses and began fishing with his new discovered bait.

It took only a few hours on their first trip out to discover that my uncle’s bait was indeed amazing and that all of a sudden they had caught a whole slew of fish. When they returned to shore and counted their first bounty, they discovered that they had brought in a total of 650 fish! What were they going to do with all these slimy creatures? Well, they put their minds together and they decided that smoking them would be the best way to not only preserve them for a length of time but also maybe they could make some extra money selling them to the local stores.

So, to make this story readable and not bore you with all the details, they did start a little smoked fish business and began distributing their fish around the local town. Before I give you the recipe for this incredible smoked fish, there are some essentials you must have to get started.

A good quality smoker is needed to begin with. I don’t believe you have to pay $100’s of dollars for one either. I have a small little smoker I purchased from Home Depot for around $75.00 and it does very well. An electric smoker is preferred because you don’t have to tend the fire as often and it cooks much more evenly.

As far as the wood you need I would recommend apple, cherry or hickory wood chunks (not chips if possible). The wood chunks last much longer and burn slower. Slow, cool smoke is what you are after and the wood chips tend to burn too quickly. Before you start your smoking, soak the wood chunks overnight in water so they will burn slow and not catch fire so easily.

Now, here is what you have been waiting for, the recipe.

*1 Cup Non-Iodized Salt (it must be non-iodized).
*1 Cup Brown Sugar
*2 Gallons of Water
*1/8 Cup of Pepper if preferred.
*Soak your fish overnight (12 hours) in the above mixture and take out and leave at room temperature for an hour before putting the fish in the smoker.

That’s It!! I know it looks simple and it is. Many recipes ask for seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and other things but this recipe is simple and the very best.

Your fish should be filleted if possible but not completely necessary as the meat will pull away from the bone easily after smoking. It is important to leave the skin on the filets as it keeps the fish from sticking to the grill. Use good quality salmon or trout when smoking. Fish with white meats do not do well and tend to dry out, as they do not have the oil in the meat like the salmon family does.

Place your wood chips in your smoker and put your fish on the grates. Depending on the temperature outside, it could take a couple of hours to several to smoke your fish. Test the fish after an hour or so to see how the texture looks. You can taste test the salmon as it is getting done to get the required texture you desire. I like my salmon fairly moist but others may like it drier. The choice is up to you.
It may take a time or two until you get this smoking thing down but after you have perfected this recipe, you will be smoking fish on a regular basis.

The Importance of Calling Your Prospects

It has taken me a good long while to realize the great importance of giving my prospects a phone call when they have requested more information about my company. Direct voice to voice communication is so important that I make it a habit to make contact with each and every person possible. Why is this? Why don’t multiple follow-up emails work just as well instead?

Let’s look at this from a human perspective. The person who has requested more information about my business is most likely looking for a variety of different things. They are either looking for more money, a better job, more freedom or all of the above. Even though this person may not have any idea who I am or what my business is all about, deep down they long to know how to make a living from home. The first mistake most beginning internet marketers do is to take their leads, load them into an autorepsonder system and send their contacts a series of emails that tells them all about their company. I use to think this was acceptable to handle my contacts this way but then I realized something very important. If I was seriously looking to change my career and start a new business venture, would I rather have a relationship with and autoresponder or a real person?

Well, the answer is pretty obvious, isn’t it? Most all of us want to know that someone will be there helping us along the way when learning a new skill or business. A series of emails might be the easy way out, (heaven knows I have chosen this route for more years than I care to admit), but nothing beats the real contact we have with our potential business partners from either a phone call or face to face. Once I started calling my leads and let them know that a real person was behind that little form they filled out, my business started to find momentum like never before.

A little nervous about making those phone calls? I was too, believe me, but like anything else in life, the more you practice, the easier it gets. Yes, you might stammer and stutter a little at first but after a few calls you will start to relax and find this to be a much better option than filling up an autoresponder with a bunch of emails no one reads. Besides, consider all the time it takes to write those letters when a phone call may only take five or ten minutes!

Here are some tips for making those first phone calls to your prospects a little easier:

*Get in a quiet place with no distractions and make sure you have all the prospect’s information in front of you before you start.

*If you are unsure of what to say, make some notes and keep them near you so you have a reference when you begin speaking.

*Take some deep breaths if you become nervous. This will get oxygen into your system and help you relax.

*When the contact answers, make sure you start with identifying who you are and what company you represent. This will hopefully spark their memory about when they requested more information and also this will help with your credibility. (By NOT stating your name and company up front, you are asking for an immediate negative response from your lead).

*Start the conversation with a good upbeat tone and simply ask the prospect if they have any questions about your business. If so, do your best to help them with a friendly comfortable tone. If they cannot remember what company you are with or they forgot they even filled out a form, verify their email address with them and tell them you will send them the link to your business. Ask them to review the information and then schedule a follow up call in a day or two.

*Always end the conversation by emphasizing with the prospect that you will support them and help them get started when they join your business. Most new entrepreneurs are going to be somewhat afraid of taking those first steps towards building their new business and if they know you are there to support them, then they are more likely to sign up.

I realize that your calls may consist of some hang-ups and some rude no thank you’s here and there and in reality, you don’t want those people of your team anyway. A little over dramatic, I admit, but don’t you see the comparison here? I have, more than a few times, been drawn into the thoughts of living the dream and having more money than I know what to do with. Thoughts of a large home and expensive cars have certainly past by my mind more than once. But after a few kicks in the head that finally brought me to my senses, I realized that common sense tells us that it is virtually impossible to create a business that can produce thousands or millions of dollars within a few short months. Business building takes time and energy and folks, there are no miracle short cuts to take no matter what you may have heard otherwise.

For some reason, the Internet has made the word “work” a dirty four letter word and this truly is a shame. Hard work, dedication and persistence have always won the race and there is no substitute for this. No matter what type of business you pursue, the final result will not be created unless you take action. Proven actions almost always provide proven results so do your best to research what you do not know and put to work right away what you do know. As I talk to more and more entrepreneurs who are working full time from home, every single one of them worked their tail off to get where they are and they never gave up on their goals.

Take some time and do some research and find a good solid business that you can make your own. Whether you choose a network marketing company or a more traditional business like window washing (my other business), take your passion of being a self-employed entrepreneur and begin your new future today.

Don’t Complain Until Your Work Is Done

I had a gentleman I sponsored into one of my businesses, (I will call him Joe), become quite irate with me about why he was not making any money. He proceeded to tell me he thought the company was a scam, was fraudulent and that this was just another “pie in the sky” program. “I am sorry you feel that way”, I told him with as much empathy as I could muster up. “What seems to be the problem?”, I asked. “This business is worthless and I have had enough”, he yelled in anger.

Well, how about the rest of the story?.....

When we first met, I sent a game plan including the usual information I send all my businesses partners; two marketing sites, a list of sites to advertise on, the approximate amount of work needed per day to achieve certain results and so forth. So, after Joe was done complaining, I proceeded to quiz Joe on what kind of action he had taken to start working his new business.

“Ok, Joe, have you reviewed all the marketing materials on the two marketing sites we sent you?” I asked.

“Uh, not all of it”, he mumbled.

“Have you reviewed the list of great sites to advertise on?”

“Let me see, I used one of them and put a couple of ads in.”

Finally I said, “How much time are you putting in everyday to achieve the results we talked about?”

“Oh, about ½ hour a day.”

Does this sound all too familiar? Believe it or not, folks, there is work involved when running an Internet business. In some cases, an Internet business requires more work than a brick and mortar business because of the tough as nails competition out there. Putting in a ½ hour a day or an hour or two a day is simply not going to get the results you need if you are truly serious about making a living from home.

Let’s face it, if you don’t do the work involved in any job or business, the results will not come by magic. Proven actions usually provide proven results in any business situation so if you have been given coaching on how to achieve the results you are after, listen to your mentors, follow up with them and do what they are asking you to do. Through dedication and hard work, you will see the fruits of your labor start to arrive at your doorstep fairly soon.

If you have the entrepreneur spirit deep inside you like I do, you most likely are constantly trying to find an online business that can not only make you some money, but also can be enjoyable to work at too. With our thoughts geared mostly towards the Internet these days, we sometimes tend to forget there is a world out there that does make money without the Internet. My business partner and I were talking the other day and he has come up with a remarkable idea; Why not take an important tool we all use on the Internet and use it to help businesses in your town bring in more customers. This tool I am speaking of is an autoresponder.

What is an autoresponder? We have all gone to websites where they have asked us to fill out a short form providing your name and email address. Straight Talk About Your Business

After many years of owning my own businesses from furniture making, window washing and internet marketing, I have learned some things from both my own experiences and advise from others that I would like to pass along to you to help you keep focused on your success.

Never give up. An entrepreneur must learn this lesson first and foremost. Building a business takes a great deal of time and effort. There is no difference in building a business on the Internet than building a business without the internet. Both take perseverance and dedication.

Work hard at your business. You cannot expect to become successful in any business working just a few hours a week. Yes, I realize you are likely to already have a full time job and trying to create another business in your spare time is difficult but this is the reality of it. If you want to succeed, you must put time into your business.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you have questions and need answers, go ahead and seek assistance. I am here for any questions you may have and if I don’t have the answer, I will find it for you.

Build a dream in your mind. Focus daily on what you want in your life. If you want, create a page on your computer with pictures, ideas, destinations or whatever you want in your life and focus on that page. Keeping your dream alive in your heart is very important in helping you create the life you desire.

Make a schedule and stick to it. When you begin your business, you may find it is easy to get distracted from what needs to be done to get your business going. It is very important that you develop a schedule and do not waver from it no matter what. If you have a schedule to follow and commit to spending time on your business each day, you will find that you will see results much faster than if you just work on your business in a haphazard way.

Finally, keep a positive attitude. Throughout my business career, I have found that keeping a positive attitude and having faith that your business will succeed is essential if you want to become a success. I recommend finding books, tapes and videos that can feed you a constant supply of positive inspirational thoughts to keep you on the right track.

If You Can't Do The Time...Then Don't Do The Crime

I heard this saying somewhere on a movie once: “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime”. This came from a dialogue between two long time criminals who made their living from stealing from rich millionaires. Their philosophy was that if you wanted to take the risk involved in committing a crime and getting caught, you had better be prepared for the possibility of time in prison. For these two criminals, the risk was worth it.

The above saying reminded me of what most network marketers go through as they are trying to start their online business. If you are not willing to put in the time it takes to become successful in network marketing, then don’t waste your time trying because success will not come to you magically.
It takes a great deal of hard work, tedious daily repetition of certain tasks and an attitude of never giving up no matter what comes in your way. Maybe the network marketer’s motto should be, “If you can’t put in the time, then you might as well go wash dishes”. I know it doesn’t rhyme, but you get the point.

So what does it take to get your network marketing business going successfully online? This is what all the money makers started doing and are still doing and it does work:

*Surf the free traffic exchanges. It really does not matter which ones your surf but I would suggest picking around 5 to start with and try to get 100 credits a day from each. This takes time and is tedious work but it is a great free source for getting hits to your website.

*Write articles and submit them to a few article directories. I know it may be hard to come up with some content but just take some time and think about what interests you, write about it and give a link to your business opportunity in your resource box.

*Join Twitter, Facebook and any other social network that interests you. Post a link everyday about what you are up to in your business or your life and people will start noticing you. It can be either business related or just fun stuff, but doing this everyday is important.

*Be active on any forums you can find that are relative to network marketing. Ask questions and give your own advice if you have some. Just make sure you put your website link in your signature file when joining.

*Set up a blog and start posting your articles there. If you cannot afford a website right now, this is a great free source for you to start with. Just go to www.blogger.com and they will walk you through on how to get started.

*Join some free safelists and start sending your ads out. This is an easy process and like the traffic exchanges, this will bring a lot of traffic to your sites.

Now, the above list is just a few of the steps to make it on the Internet but starting with these is a great start and you will see some business come in if you are diligent everyday with these tasks. A bit overwhelming I must admit isn’t it? But, you need to look at your business as a real job that takes real work. Like any profession, learning and studying is a must to become successful. The ads about making millions in a few short months are absolutely a lie and wrong so please do not fall for these. Find a legitimate business that offers value and truth to what they offer and stick with it. It might take a year or two until you see some real results but do not give up and the money will start coming in.
